Centered between Houston and Galveston island along I-45 through 9 cities and two counties, the Clear Lake TX Area was colonized in 1825 by Stephen F. Austin and became a thriving agricultural area in the 1920s, before becoming centered around the NASA/Johnson Space Center (JSC) in the 1960s. The cities that make up the Clear Lake TX and Houston Bay Area were built to support the aerospace industry and its administrators, engineers, astronauts, and support staff. Related businesses have also moved to the area to create one of the highest concentrations of aerospace businesses and expertise in the nation (including a growing biotechnology employing nearly 3,000 growing from the astronaut and station programs).
JSC, along with the Petrochemical industry, have been the major economic drivers for the area with the Medical industry starting to play a larger role. Also a major recreation area, the Clear Lake TX area has seen a large increase in the Commercial Boating and Hospitality/Tourism industries. Clear Lake itself is a 1,728 acre natural inlet that provides harborage for the third largest number of privately owned boats in the nation. Tourism is also a significant part of the bay area economy with Space Center Houston, the official visitors center of Johnson Space Center boasting millions of visitors each year. It is home to the shuttle carrier aircraft, shuttle mockup (named Explorer), Mercury 9, Gemini 5 capsule, Apollo 17 command module, Lunar Rover trainer, Skylab trainer mock-up, and numerous other displays and exhibitions. Space Center Houston also operates a tour of numerous JSC facilities including mission control, the lunar sample lab, and space station module mock-ups.
Further down from JSC is the Armand Bayou Nature Center, one of the largest urban wilderness preserves in the nation. 370 species of animals live within its borders in Clear Lake TX. It is located along the central flyway the largest migratory bird route in North America and is part of the the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail. It is also one of the coastal preserves designated under the Texas Coastal Reserve Program.
The Clear Lake TX Area area encompasses approximately 125 square miles including the cities of Clear Lake City (77058,77059,77062), Clear Lake Shores (77565), El Lago (77586), Friendswood (77546), Kemah (77565), League City (77573), Nassau Bay (77058), Seabrook (77586), Taylor Lake Village (77586) and Webster (77598). The area includes Galveston and Harris counties with parts of Houston and Pasadena. Clear Lake boasts two of the best school districts in the Greater Houston area, the Clear Creek Independent School District (CCISD) and the Friendswood Independent School District (FISD) (View a fact sheet about the high quality Area School Districts). Border Cities of Bacliff (77518), Dickinson (77539) and Pearland (77584,77581) are often considered part of the greater Clear Lake/Houston Bay Area.
